This Kode 9 mix of Sinogrime came about today, as published by Dan Hancox. It details the small sub genre of grime that took influecnce from a eastern palette of sounds – I’ve always presumed from computer games like Tekken or something though from the almost stereotypical way they’re replicated.
Anyways, these tunes were amazing – and furthered to a point by Dusk & Blackdown’s album Margins Music, which I think I have hyped extensively on the blog before. If you haven’t heard it, but it. It’s sick. Failing that, buy the Grievous Angel remix album mixtape forthcoming on Keysound. It;s equally sick, if not more so. I’ve not had time to decide on that yet.
This has all lead me to go a bit Simon Reynolds on you now, with a musical theory that will undoubtedly bore the entrails out of you and cheapen the music extensively. But, working on the idea of how Untold’s more recent stuff has been described as a merging of Ice Rink era Wiley stylings with the danceable shuffling of house – I’d prepose that Hessle Audio’s more recent hyper-rhythmic, ‘what the hell are all these noise/ oh no they all went by too fast and were too damn sick for me to have any idea’ kind of sound; relates back to this kind of stuff. Perhaps the eastern influences aren’t so blazenly apparent, but did Wiley really sit down studying the intricate melodical musings of Chinese folk music? No he didn’t, I know it’s a fantastic metal image but he just didn’t. Also, this is probably my first music theory and it’s allowed to be as rubbish as I want it to be.
