I thought Belgians had terrible musical taste, but apparently that’s pretty racist and totally untrue.

Haven’t updated the blograg recently, so I thought I would post a little round up of the various things me been listening to.
Big mixtapes, or if you feel the need to abbreviate – BIGTAPES! Each and every day. This is how I live my life. One of the biggest recently was Jackmaster’s Wireblock mix for WIRE. Jackmaster literally dicks on so many other DJs right about now. Nobody comes close to his selection or his rapid skills on a serato set-up. Makes me want to cry, somebody give him a radio show!
Oneman’s recent show with man like Brackles was also a delight. Best thing about this. Was that I was listening to it on my bike the other day and during the epic break of Something In Your Eyes I overtook some knob in one of those raw halfords spandex get-ups. It was real epic. I felt like a club rep fucking his first tourist of the summer season after that one.
Purchases wise it doesn’t get a lot better than Nosaj Thing’s album. The tracklist should read something like 1. Showah Riddim 2. Fiyah Riddim 3. Powah Riddim … etc.
THIS Luke Vibert remix is straight heat. It’s kind of rubbish that this remix 12″ came out before all of Falty DL’s own stuff though. Mainly because I want it so so bad.
Oh, and for the spotify. It has to be MJ Cole – Sincere. I can’t believe MJ Cole is playing Glastonbury, I couldn’t be happier.

I swear from now on the only music i’m gonna want to listen to is dancehall. It has everything you could ever want from music.
1. It manages to sound both hilarious and good at the same time.
2. It can get really offensive in like a homophobic/sexist way.
3. I’m pretty sure dancehall parties are full of women.
4. Dancing to it is kind of like trying to impersonate every good animal in West midland safari park whilst simultaneously attempting to fuck everything in the room.
5. It’s kinda scary and makes you feel brave for listening to it, like when you eat something slightly out of date and it doesn’t make you ill.
6. It contains airhorns, guys with knock off sunglasses on top of their head, auto-tune, dance crazes and really quite insanely violent imagery.
If you need more persuasion than that you must be some kind of knob. Listen to this. 1 hour and 14 minutes of rowdy bashment from The Heatwave. It literally makes you want to ramp your close relatives.

“Jam Hot summer time business” – is what i’d be shouting if I was the PR for these two future artists.
DâM-FunK is where it’s at. Guys making the kind of music you hear in 80s movies, like perfectly fitting the three 80s movie locations.
1. 86 Degrees is straight 80s strip club vibes. Like where all the women where that real high underwear that just never made any ass look good. Whoever made that fashionable was an idiot.
2. Mellow Windz would fit some kind of Uni Campus emotionable vibe, like if John just didn’t love Kate no more but he just dodn’t know how to tell her. Cheer up John, soon it will be summer again and you’ll be able to hang with your guyseating cookie dough till you barf.
3. The tune on his myspace that’s called It’s Benji B would be in one of those 80s sports film, in a training montage. I could get pumped to it.
Dam Funk is actually a lot better than I just made him sound. This interview will explain better.
Someone set to explode, well to release a couple of really good 12″ that are destined to become future discogs gold, is Pearson Sound. He’s had a good few of his tracks hidden away on some very goood recent mixtapes. Like the Ramadanman Apple Pips cast, which blew me away. And also this Oneman show, which is heavy.
I set up a tumblr to try and reduce the amount of tiny post on here.
wuuuurrrrddssss

Recently I got blown away (not literally) by the productions of Jmes Blake. That is to say I got blown away by one of his productions ‘Air And Lack Thereof’. A forthcoming release on Hemlock, and a real stinker. Then to my surprise this week, the return of Rob Booth’s electronic explorations. “Bodacious” I hear you cry. Bodacious indeed.
The mix is nice and all, but his productions are where it’s at.

After reading the various responses to what was said at the Hardcore Continuum discussion/ Slags laying down the beef session held at the Uni of East London the other week, i’ve drawn some conclusions of my own. What i found particularly interesting was this piece posted on the heatwave blog, suggesting characteristics from bashment/ soca/ dancehall being echoed in UK Funky. I can see what is being said here, but to be fair my only gripe with the hardcore continuum is if you look at something for long enough, especially withing the merky realms of music, you can find whatever the hell you want to find.
So is it all that surprising that probably the UK’s finest Dancehall DJ has managed to find a link between two genres that would fit oh so nicely in his sets. Fact is, if you stare long enough at your dick thinking “that’s not a dick, it’s a stingray – eventually you’ll think you have a stingray for a dick and you’ll walk around like some big man flashing people shouting “Steve Erwin got what he deserved”. At least i’m pretty sure that’s true. My point is you can link Funky to just about anything really, its been compared to techno (e.g. Hard House Banton), grime (e.g. Lil Silva), Garage (e.g. i’m pretty sure this is the only reason Dusk and Blackdown are down with it, also the amount of ex-garage producers on it is unreal), not to mention almost any kind of house imaginable (understandably).
What this all leads me up to though is an album you should almost definately purchase. If I was to describe it, it would be that Heatwave piece, but with an extra Hardcore Continuum/ Simon Reynolds outburst sized injection of WONKY (vom). Ras G’s “Brotha From Anotha Planet” is freakin’ dope.

Then again, anything released on Flying Lotus’ and Gaslamp Killer’s Brainfeeder label is going to be perhaps the most exciting releases of the year. Perhaps not quite as upfornt as the label owners own styles, Ras G has got his slow jam Ragga sampling Hip Hop style down (something I think we all wish we could achieve).
Sorry for the geeky post, just had to remind myself that sometimes I can at least talk relatively seriously about music. For light relief please listen to this Ben UFO promo mix. P.S. Next-aconda!
